Aircraft Mothballing
Mothballing or preserving aircraft has been a challenge for the U.S military complex since the end of World War ll. It is now a problem for the commercial aircraft industry, worldwide. It has been a little bit of a chase to find the right person to discuss this challenge. It is public knowledge that there is an abundance of aircraft that need protection. We hear Airbus, Spirit and Lufthansa for starters are looking to mothball a significant part of their fleet. At a cost of $125 million for 727 or upwards of $350 million for a Boeing 747 something needs to be done. Wrapping up with polyethylene sheet may sound like a good idea but “Shrink wrap” for a plane may be as useful as throwing a blue tarp over it.
A better choice of material and chemistry would be Cocoon a PVC Co-Polymer that is a complete air and water barrier, fire retardant and resistant to salts, glycols, and all the usual corrosive substances that you would expect to encounter. Cocoon was a creation of the United States Department of Defense in August of 1948. A material was needed to protect our massive military investment in World War ll. All equipment: battleships, tanks, aircraft, and vehicles were mothballed with Cocoon. It made it possible to quickly enter the Korean War nine years later. Cocoon was the solution and still is the solution.
Cocoon has a few members to the family. The exterior coating Cocoon 550 is the perfect solution. Applied at 40 dry mils (dft) vs. normal 20 dft. applications with primer. (14 sheets of legal paper). Cocoon is spray applied liquid PVC co-Polymer. Upon curing: A non-flammable, complete air/vapor barrier with a biocide. This coating will be strippable with no residue left behind. Complete UV Protection. Upon disposal of material after optimal protection… it is recyclable.
I am attaching numerous links and photos(below) relating to mothballing aircraft. Cocoon is part of US History. Installed at Cape Canaveral launch facility, Hoover Dam, US Capitol, Plum Island so much more. Its non-flammable, non-contributory and durability are Cocoon’s signature. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear that you have more questions. That is Cocoon.
